Unlike “common” cultured pearls, Mabe pearls are born as protuberances in the internal nacre layer of the mollusk, caused by external parasites that cause irritation. The mollusk in question, to protect itself, covers the foreign body with several layers of nacre, thus creating the so-called “nacre bubble”. Mabe pearls are therefore pearls formed inside the mollusk but close to the shell and not in the body of the oyster.
